Managing Those Pesky Distractions

Are you constantly busy but never seem to get anything done?

We all do it, start off with the best intentions to finish the task we have started before moving on to the next.  We put our heads down, get on with it, ideas flowing, feeling on a roll ….but then …. we get that little sound notification that there’s a new little message waiting for us, it might have also popped up on our screen, tantalising us with a little clue as to its contents.  We try to ignore it. We know how this goes. Once it’s opened that’s it. The current task is abandoned. The new message takes up all our thought processes. It usually leads to formulating a reply. And by the time we go back to the original task the flow has gone, the ideas dried up, the momentum dead.

But now we know the message is there it is so hard to ignore.  It’s already distracting us and interfering with the flow of what we are working on. We just HAVE to open it.  Just a quick read we tell ourselves, just a brief look and then go back to the task at hand. It is probably something unimportant anyway. It will only take a second.

Sound familiar?  How do you break this habit and stay focused? How can you manage the numerous distractions?  We will be talking lots more in future blogs about managing your time so that your business can flourish.  There are many books and articles out there but we have had the most success with the Pomodoro Technique. If you haven’t heard of it it’s worth a Google.  The idea is to split your day (or working hours) into 25 minute chunks, with regular breaks.  It can be applied to any type of business and really will change your productivity levels and help you regain control.  https://francescocirillo.com/pages/pomodoro-technique
